hi went to the coop to day.had a egg with no shell.. it was layed by my speckled hen which stop laying on first of this mounth can you help .. :?

Hi Garry.

It's normal to get an occasional shell-less egg or softy. It can be caused by a bit of stress or a surprise.

They should always have access to grit and oyster shell or lime flour to supplement their layers pellets or mash which will eliminate the risk of calcium defficiency.

I read it on the Katie Thear section on this very site  

We've been having a lot of feather pecking lately and they don't seem to want to stop. I'm afraid it's due to them not free-ranging. I've PMd Annie about it.
The only course of action that we can see long term is to offer them to someone who can free-range them.
We can't run to leccy fencing or even chainlink at the moment.  :?

I'll see what Annie says and post up once we have some options.

Have been thinking of giving my 2 ambers away to someone who has space to free range.
Though I have ordered some ucadex spray to see if that works, cause i dont really want to get rid of them cause i love em and they are beautiful(apart from Roasties tatty bum :shock: )

It is a shame that they can't cope so well with being enclosed. We have a big garden and could let them roam but there's about 60ft of 2'6" fence to next door and a thin hedge to the other side. It's cost a fortune to keep them in. :?

I think stopping the pecking would give temporary relief but I would imagine they'll start again at some point. It's a real heartbreaker but got to put their welfare first.

It has been upsetting for us too!(I been banging on about it for months on various threads) You could try some of those goggles that bodger uses (I couldnt work them though :cry: ) none of my other girls do it at all? just the ambers. I really dont want them to go but feel they not getting the freedom they long for :cry: Yes! sorry for the thread hyjack too!
