Planting fruit trees within pallet borders?
« on: November 13, 2008, 15:09 »
Hello!  :)

I am going to use pallets for a variety of stuff on my new allotment but mainly for the composters and borders. I was actually going to put the 3 composters at the bottom of the plot and incorporate them in the boundry, and just wondered if it would be ok to plant 3 fruit trees between the pallets imbetween the composters, to provide privacy and a wind break. It would be from right to left, composter, boundry pallet (with tree?) composter and so on.
Its quite windy up there and I thought the pallets would make a good hold for the trees till they mature. I often see them in LDLs for a measly £6.99!
Or would it be a better idea to simply plant the trees in front of the pallet and secure them?
Obviously a complete novice in these matters so any advice appreciated!
 :)

You'll need space around your pallet bins to get stuff in and out and room to manoeuvre your wheelbarrow so just bear that in mind  :D   I've incorporated two bins into my boundary but three would be better.  Nothing wrong with fruit trees on your boundary though but just not in the way of the bins as they don't need to be shaded by anything overhanging foliage as compost likes full sun

Ah, I never thought of that! Well a change of plan is in order then! May put the compost bins elsewhere and stick with the trees at the bottom then.
Its just that I have seen a number of kids using the path at the bottom onto the local estate and dont really want them peering in at my fat ass whilst I am working!!!  :

you could always plant a hedge or put some fruit bushes in such as blackberry, loganberry etc

Also - there may be a danger of fruit falling into the bins, and access may be difficult too - I've also got a question about apple trees, but I'll start another thread.
Some nice, prickly blackberries/tayberries etc might also deter anyone taking a shortcut

Agreed. I have two bins between apple trees at home for want of anywhere more suitable, and they aren't doing well at all. Mainly too dry, but even in the odd wet patch it's not heated up, it's more of a wormery!
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".
