Can I ask a really thick question about electric fences?  How do you set up the gate?  I've really no idea, looking at the components it's all a mystery to me.  I'm thinking of asking santa for one for Christmas.  How much is a battery to run it?  thanks everyone :)

some people use an old car battery to run a fence, some even run off normal D cell batteries ( i think) we bought a deep cycle leisure battery from a caravan and camping place it cos about £80.00. as for the gate, im not sure yet. I'll let you know once it has come and we have set it up.

We also have loads of spare posts because we have electric fencing for the horses.

The netting has to form a complete loop so for me the 'gate' is just where the two ends meet. You simply pull one of the posts out of the ground and move it aside to get in and then close it up again after you come out. I loop the 2 ends of the electric cable round the top of the posts and clip on the connector.

You could also set-up a conventional gate with the fencing terminating on either side.

just a point here -- eg the ends meet to form an "enclosure" however, they dont have to meet to be effective -if that makes sense?
But I do agree using the two ends as SW suggests..... you dont really then need a gate :D

our fence was to long so when we got to the corner where the ends meet i just doubled back on its self oh and to save money on extra fence posts try using garden canes

I've a load of the posts cos they were cheap at Countrywide a few months back (about £11 for 10 so I bought 20) and have been using them as a moveable enclosure with plastic bird mesh.  The girls are only out in it whilst we're around though.

Can we electrocute these little nasties??

Obviously traps down & the 'food' for them, just wondered if there's anything else to keep the numbers down. Our hens are shut in at night, so the electricity isn't a problem then. Cats & dogs?? or are we just talking enough power to make them go to the loo instantly?

Thanks,
Decal Man
