I tried to re-introduce the poorly hen today
« on: October 30, 2008, 21:33 »
One of the POL hens has had a bad eye and a cold, the cold has all cleared up (she has been on antibiotics for almost 2 weeks) but we are sure she is blind in the poorly eye, we think she was pecked.
I tried to re-introduce her to the other hens this morning, one of the older hens rushed up to her and pecked her bad eye, so I took her straight out.   I don´t want to cull her, she´s been a real fighter.   I´m thinking of a small hen house and a small area for scratching about.  I thought about putting Emu with her, as she seems to be much more alone from the other hens.
The house needs to be built on a tight  budget, we have quite a few pallets so I am hoping I can use them to make a house that is raised off the ground cos of flooding/rats etc.  We have fencing going around 3 sides of the area I am thinking of using in the garden, all I need to do is add a gate and another bit of fencing.  Any suggestions?

You could make quite a decent home with a few pallets raised off the floor on some short fence posts. Can you get them to bits easy enough ?

You could always make the gate and last bit of fencing out of pallets too
He who asks is a fool for five minutes, but he who does not ask remains a fool forever.

The new house won´t get built today, it is a filthy day here, high winds and lots of rain :(   Another day in the garage won´t do henny any harm!
We are really needing the rain here, the water levels are seriously low as last years winter rains didn´t happen-  we are making up for them this year!
Now the henny is better (aoart from her eye) I will try her again on kitten food, she is still very light in weight (wish I could say the same for me :( )Just got to think of a name for a one eyed hen.  I did think of Alana, as by brother (Alan) only has one eye!!

I´ve been given Doxiciclina for the hen.  I´ve just bathed her eye, she still won´t open it.  She is eating ok and drinking, I´ve mixed some of her food with kitten food, so hopefully she will put on weight soon.  You couldn´t even make soup with her she is so tiny :(
