People who overwinter pepper plants.

Hi,

I want to overwinter some chili pepper plants of mine. Can someone confirm if I have the correct process.

wait for plants to go dormant/drop leaves
prune stem to several inches above soil?
prune roots in proportion
re pot

Has anyone got pictures to demonstrate? When are the plants likely to drop their leaves?

cheers

Did one of mine last week and posted a before/after... Im not saying its the right way - but its the way I've done it for the last couple of years. The frost has taken all but one other naga that I may cut back.

... soon be time to start sowing again  :D

I cut mine back by about a third, put it in the greenhouse. It died

Well to be precise, they all did

Lardman - I will do similar, though I want to wait for them to dormant (whenever that may be!). What variety have you got there btw?

CQ - are you sure the frost did not get them?

Try putting some fleece over them...or bring them inside if you have the room. :)

I've overwintered chillis for a couple of years, the first year some died from over-watering and some from drying out (different parts of the flat).  Generally though, they seem pretty resilient and cutting them back doesn't seem to be a killer.

I've left them until well after fruiting to cut them back though - when the leaves start to fall in dec/jan.

Although looking at this site : http://www.fatalii.net/growing/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=95&Itemid=105
it looks like they can stand pretty brutal treatment!
