Advice please - ex-batt with a bad wing
« on: October 18, 2008, 18:52 »
Sorry to bother you all with another question

Well picked up 5 ex-batts today, but no 5 (please stay alive) is very under par.  I noticed her wing looks lower than on her other side and I suspect she's broken it although it's not dragging down on the ground though.  She's not really pecking the ground or moving much.  When put to bed tonight she's the one laying down.  The others are leaving her alone for now she just seems to be the most traumatized one and her poos are diarorrhea like. We also haven't seen her eat or drink.
I know there's a topic on here somewhere about broken wings but I can't find it.  If someone knows which one I'm referring to, if they could give me the link that would be great.
I'll go out later tonight to check on the girls and will stay vigilant over the next few days just in case the nasty but necessary deed has to be done  .
I know that this is sometimes what you get when you re-home ex-batts and on the postive side the other four are great and full of life :D  :D  :D .  They've captivated our hearts already and I'm gonna hand over to hubby so he can hopefully post some pics now for you good folks :D
Thoughts lead on to purposes; purposes go forth in action; actions form habits; habits decide character; and character fixes our destiny

If you can get someone to help, try this........stretch her wing out at a right angle from her body and carefully run your fingers down the wing feeling the bone to see if there any fractures. If you locate a fracture gently pull both parts either side of the break and try to re-locate the break. If the break is in the part of the wing closest to the body place the wing against the body and put a t-shirt sleeve over the whole bird from the head ( you may have to tape it to make it fit snugly). If the break is in the end part of the wing, tape this part of the wing to the upper part of the wing only.....don't strap the taped-up wing to the body. Leave this in place for about 4 weeks, checking each week. If you've had to use a tee-shirt.....after 5 days remove the tee-shirt for about 20-30 minutes so the hen can excercise the other wing. Do this every other day or the muscles on the good wing will deteriorate. Good luck....hope this helps. :)

Hi
I had the same problem with one of my four ex-batts I got in August. I took her to the vets and it was confirmed that she had a broken wing high up on her shoulder. They strapped her up and re-dressed her after a week, a week later I took her to be re-dressed again and the vet told me that the joint had overlapped and wouldn't heal so leave off the dressing. Well to my surprise the wing had actually healed and she is now flapping her wings with no problems. She is still the scraggiest of the four but not far off being fully feathered.
I think if you follow the advice of using a T shirt and immobilizing the wing you're in with a good fighting chance.
Good Luck

Brian

Oh my goodness - just refound this topic and found all your very kind advice after losing my connection for what feels like an eternity.       ( a hundred times !)
Have updated everyone with the situation on chicken chat about Sophie, but situation has now changed just this minute due to reading Brian's and Agapanthus' very kind advice!  Away to reassess situation and will let know what course of action is to be.  Once again so so sorry for not being able to respond before now.
