Where abouts in greece are you chrissie. I spent the last 4 years living on the island of Zakynthos only came back last October! I grew tomatoes in the soil... used to dig a trench bout 8in deep and plant at the bottom of that, so that when you water it stays near the roots. This is how greek friends told us to do everything, mind you have to water lots early in morn then again in evening.  8)
I bought all my seeds from 'seeds of Italy' cos they give you planting times for the med on the packets.
You wouldn't think it but i grew the best ever swedes there although all the expats said they wouldn't grow. If you want something bad enough you'll find a way :tongue2:

that's not my problem its the club root or ell worm i have in the soil which stunts my tomatoes and I'm reduced to growing things that are not effected , hence my plea .
i went to zakynthos for a hol its a lovely place and we met a couple here on their hols who were going to live in zakynthos .
we live in halkidiki northern Greece its the first finger on the map don't know if you know it at all we love it here and are now in winter mode but with shorts ha ha
thanks for the help

I just wanted to ask, what the problem was, Chrissie. Tomatoes don't commonly get club root, so that's one down.

Would be good if you could post or find a photo on the net of they looked like, in the letter case, you probably found your problem too.

Nematodes do lumps for one thing, but some fungi will commonly cause extra growth.

I have posted the problem before , i cant post a pic but will look for one to go to .
the roots on my toms have clusters of knobbly the whole length of the roots the plants don't grow correctly , i tried growing in large pots but it was so hot this year , now i will have no where to grow any next year , i was advised to use garden lime on the soil but from what i have read i wont be able to plant toms for 6 years , as i have no other place to put them and i think this lumpy root thing is all over the garden , i have also grown marigolds all over the place as i was told that would help as well , oh woe is me .
