Too much room for mushrooms
« on: October 12, 2008, 18:40 »
I'm posting this query on behalf of an allotment friend (honest, guv   )

She has got a lovely crop of funghi growing amongst her brassicas.  I suspect it must have come from the compost.

She was wondering whether the mushrooms will affect the brassicas, will she have to weed the mushrooms out?  I suspect the answer is that she needs to do some weeding, but is it really necessary, do you think?

Piccie here ...

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

(Mind you, if they were mine, they'd be out by now - yucky yucky plants)

to be honest, ifit was me I would be weeding them out and also weeding out the grass growing between the cabbages as well. I do go a bit over the top tbough some would say.

trouble is, you cant weed them out. The mushroom you see is only the fruit body, the main 'plant' for want of a better term consists of masses of microscopic mycellia, like very thin roots. It will be feeding on the manure in the ground, or maybe any woodchippings in there.

They wont hurt the plants, but might hurt you. Looking at them i dont think they are poisonous, but are probably pretty unpallatable!

Ta, all.

I've already warned her about weeding the grass out before it takes over again.

I'll pass on the comments about not eating them (I don't think she was planning on doing so as she didn't plant them to start with, but better safe than sorry).
