it was my first year this year and I found spuds very easy to grow and the yields were very good.Next year I'm growing everything.

Depends what you like, what room youve got and what you want to have a go at!

Easy stuff...go for salad leaves, lettuces, radish, beetroot, spuds, peas, broad beans etc

Harder stuff include sweetcorn, brassicas (as you may have to net them), spuds (!), parsnips and carrots (depending on the soil you have)

I could go on forever but you need to look at the first sentence and get back to us!

Hi there.

That's a bit like asking how long's a piece of string  :D  :D

First of all, is your plot clear or do you need to do lots of clearance before planting?  That will dictate how much can go in, and when.

Potatoes are said to be very good at breaking up newly cleared ground - they go in next march / april time, but I wouldn't use them over too much ground or you'll end up with a puzzle over rotation issues later on.

Next, decide what you like to eat - there's no point in growing stuff you don't like (and believe me, I'm sure there's many of us who have done that!)

Things that are going in now include overwintering garlic, onions and shallots.  Also broad beans.

Most other stuff is either coming to an end now or should have been in a couple of months ago.

I think the best step for you to do, once you've got an assessment of what you might like to grow, is to have a look at the information section of this site - it sets out what can be done monthly.

And consider getting John's book, Veg growing month by month.  Does what it says on the tin, and there's free seeds with it at the moment.

Almost forgot to tell you to get a seed catalogue or two ...
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

It already has winter cabbage growing on it but nothing else as it hasnt been seen to for a couple of months.
It is roughly 15'x45' at a guess

Onion sets next March / April.
You stick them in just below the surface and apart from weed around them and watering if we have a drought   you just leave then alone. Then in August you have enough Onions to last you throughout the winter and into the spring. I planted Sturon this year and they were £1.99 for a 100 sets from B & Q and they were fab.
99% Organic and 1% Slug Pellets.

Allotment holder since 27th May 2007.

If we're talking NOW - how about some winter onion sets & garlic? Still not too late.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

It seems to make sense to me that if space is limited then concentrate on stuff that is not cheap in the shops

Most important thing I found when I started a couple of months ago was to see some progress taking place.  Slightly more difficult now due to weather but use the allotment in some way - onions, garlic, broad beans etc.  Any of these can grow during the winter and will make you feel like you are achieving something other than simply clearing the ground.

One of the saddest things for me is the number of people who have taken over new plots on our site and are 'waiting until the spring'.  Use the ground you have!

Oh Elcie that is so true!. One of my neigbours has spent the entire morning raking/levelling all the ground he dug over 2 weeks ago. He will now leave it until probably till April time. by then it will be nicely covered in young tender................
