Carrots and Polytunnels
« on: September 26, 2008, 18:58 »
Has anyone any experience of growing carrots in polytunnels. We do not do well at dodging the carrot fly even when we have fleece and cloches over most of the summer but that restricts growth and risks diseases. I am about to buy a polytunnel -- is it worth going a bit bigger and trying carrots in sucession over a long season.
Many thanks
R

Not myself, but there are a number of people on my allotment that do and are succesful, however they do have to go down each day to water.
I always buy an f1 carrot seed and plant onions around the bed, never have any bother with carrot fly. Might be just luck though

I read in a book about the best ways to deter carrot fly.  Apparantly all you need is to erect a barrier, like a fence rather than a covering,  of fleece or some such thing about half a metre high, as (I'm sure you know) carrot fly only fly close to the ground and would not be able to fly over the barrier and get to all your lovely carrots.
I have a pair of secateurs and I'm not afraid to use them!!

We grow our carrots in the poly with quite some success.  What I would say though is if you have the room get the bigger poly.  We have a 10ft x 25ft and wished we had got a larger one.  Everything grows really well in there.
ALLOTMENTNUT. GROWING EVERYTHING AND ANYTHING.  JUST GIVE IT ALL A TRY!!!!
