Potatoes and chiting

When the time comes early next year to chit spuds why cant you use normal supermarket ones and chit them ?
could anyone enlighten me on this ?

You can but you carry the risk of bringing in disease etc

Apart from the risk it's probably cheaper to buy seed potatoes these days.

I bought about 14 Nicola seed potatoes from Wilkos for £1.49 last year.

Just been to our COOP and it was £1.99 for a bl@@dy 1.25 kg bag of maris piper.

Unbelievable.... almost a pound a pound for spuds :shock: :shock: :shock:

The proper seed spuds are certified virus free and there's more choice than growing supermarket spuds

The Wilko ones come in smallish bags too as it's not everyone who wants to grow loads of the same variety

I can not find any seed potatoes anywhere, been looking for 2 weeks now.

Been to every shop conceivable, and the only ones on eBay I can find are £10+ (inc postage) and the bidding is getting higher and higher.

Thats not really helpful wheni wanted some Carlingfords for Christmas time.

I know I can plant them in Sept, but this month is fast running away from us!

Most catalogues have the closing date for orders as 30 June. They are planted in the summer to get a few weeks growth before the weather turns.

And they are not cheaper than your e-bay ones!

What do you expect we do about that?

Plant some from the grocers if you are desparate, Riala, but they need the gh, if at all they come to something, that is.

All I have is a greenhouse (2 actually) and I was told by Homebase and Wilkos that I can plant Carlingfords as late as September in time for Christmas but the yeild will be low. (which I don't mind as we are only 2 adults and 1 toddler).

Lets try and put both the cost and Christmas crops into context from what I have learned in the short time that I have been growing.
First the cost, I buy first second and main crop via my allotment society, orders placed now for delivery in January cost £2.25 per 3kg bag,which I think is quite good.
Based on the above Christmas crops will be FREE.
When harvesting the first earlies,set a few tubers aside. Plant them in the usual way,cover with a cloche or polythene about now and you should have new spuds for Christmas.
It worked last year but in the mystery of gardening world it might not this year.

Well, Homebase and Wilkos are not growing, rather selling them; I'm sure Vegmandan's price is not for atumn sowing seed, actually, our Wilkos never has any autumn sowing bulbs or tubers, it's straight onto crimbo humbug.

Not rude, just silly. You by all means try them, you are a bit late and they are not necessarily good, but you gotta have a go if you want to.

Even us can't provide you cheaper than planting a few of your grocery bag.

Think you'll find all seed potatoes at Wilko's are "seasonally exhausted"
which means we don't get them till next year.
Gob's is right straight into crimbo humbug, gift wrap and cards are now out for sale at mine, I'm hoping the fertilizers and round up go down soon

True... the spuds I bought at wilkos were in the Spring for Spring planting.

This was as a response to Garddrw's initial question "Early next Year what can I plant...etc...not what can I plant for Christmas.
