I planted seed potatoes at the beginning of August(?*) - roughly half in a decapitated plastic dustbin with drainage holes in the bottom, and the other half in a well-composted bed at ground level (ie not raised).

Now the potatoes in the bed are in flower and the ones in the tub are just getting there.

Surely all this is happening far too quickly if the plan is to have new potatoes for Christmas dinner?

* Note to self: now realise how important it is to keep a garden diary so I know when stuff gets planted etc. Make this a New Year's resolution.

you could always leave them in the ground / bin after flowering (make sure you fleece them when the temp drops whilst the haulms are still green).  that way they'll put on some more growth and will be a better size for the dinner
