i need about a tonne of topsoil for my raised beds.  i'm after screened loam.  i've looked on the net and most quotes are around £80.  is this the best way to do it, or is there a cheaper alternative?

i've spoken with the dept that run the alloments in Birmingham, they've never heard of any such service for this local authority.

are there any other alternatives?

Local builders may be able to help saves the skip prices if you have a trailer to take it away on

When I needed this for my raised beds last year I took a trip to the garden centre and there was a local business selling bags of topsoil - I gave them a ring and they were happy to dump a couple of tonnes on my drive - for about £80

travis perkins sells it in bulk bags,
i mentioned a while back about buying compost/soil from our local council, its the stuff that has been recycled from our brown bins,we can get a load for our plots for £40 its about 5 ton,i enquired about picking it up my self with the van but your not allowed too because you wont be insured on the site
might be worth a phone call to the recycle folks at your council
feed the soil not the plants
organicish
