I've read somewhere you can add garlic powder to the chooks food to help keep the mites off the birds. Does anyone know how much powder to use?
Thanks

I was told to put a peeled clove of garlic in the drinking water to ward of worms, I have been doing this and replacing the garlic twice a week when I clean out water container.
this advice was given by a lady who runs a swan rescue and sanctuary as well as ducks, wild birds including owls and hedgehogs so I think it would be correct

I add garlic powder to the chooks pellets but it's aid the digestion rather than dissuade mites  :D

I use the type you buy for horses and use about a table spoonful to about a kilo pellet. - roughly

how do you get the powder to stick to the pellets Aunty?

They seem to end up on the bottom of the feeder.  They also form a layer that is stuck to the inside of the feeder.

Yes they do but I feel that as the essential part of the garlic is the oil it will difuse from the powder onto into the pellets.

I don't know that for a fact of cause but it sounds logical to me  8)

i put a few drops of cod liver oil in first, the cod liver oil sticks to the pellets and the garlic sticks to the cod liver oil.

Think TMG's idea is a good one. The oils will only diffuse through to the pellets if they are in contact and Brownian motion is pretty slow in solids
