Where are all my worms?
« on: September 16, 2008, 21:03 »
Went to the lotty this afternoon & decided to turn the compost heap. When I took off thecover there were a number of very obvious tunnels dug through it. They were all about 2" dia. Then when turning heap & expecting rodents to emerge, I noticed a distinct lack of worms! I reckon I have had a visit from a little velvety gentleman. Ever heard of moles in compost?

No, but that means nothing.

On the other hand there will be different wildlife in your compost depending on its stage in decomposition. So lack of worms today doesn't necessarily mean anything bad but normal.

I'd be thinking of rats more like...

I've had those tunnels in my black plastic compost bin on a regular basis and I suspected moley. Does a really good job of churning the contents up and it speeds up the process no end  :D
