Fruits and Boggy Ground
« on: September 15, 2008, 22:39 »
Hey All!!

Quick question, i have acquired some fruit bushes this evening and want to get them in the ground asap, however, the only plot i have available is one which has boggy parts. My fruits are rasps (summer & autumn) and red currants, and there will also be some strawbs. Will these be ok in boggy soil or should i sort the soil out first??!?

Muchas gracias

i would say sort the soil by giving it some drainage and plenty of manure at least that is what i would do. but some more experienced persona might give you a better idea than me as i am novice still. plenty of composted material will help too!

Regular boggy conditions will definitely quickly rot soft fruit roots like strawberries. They like some moisture but really can't take heavy damp which is why people often complain of moldy fruit. Currants and raspberries can take more moisture but you'd get a lot of top growth at expense of fruit. So, you'd best sort out the soil first - lots of organic matter, some sharp sand, perhaps even make raised planting ridges so the plant crowns don't get over moist.
