Help!!! Never kept chikens
« on: September 09, 2008, 07:32 »
Wonder if anyone can help.  We have been given permission by the allotment officer to have 6 chickens on our plot.  Have never had any before so am waiting till spring when I have had more time to learn how to look after them.  At least if we make a mistake the weather will be warmer and they won't come to so much harm.

We have been offered a chicken house 6' 6" long by 3'6" wide and 3'6" from the top of the arc to the ground.  Will this be big enough for six. ?Also will 3 nesting boxes be enough for 6 chickens?  Also (sorry about all the questions, but ignorance is no excuse for mistreating an animal) if we put a perch in the length of the arc will ths be enough for all of them?

Thanks for any advice offered and sorry to be so stupid.

make it the length of the longest side and that would be better .a simple A frame with a batten ( round the edges off ) 6ft long will be great . 3 boxes will be fine they will probably only use one    read all the posts and articles on here in chicken info and you will have a good grounding before you start ... :)

You sound like a very sensible person, Allotmentnut. If you have a question, there will be lots of other people thinking the same way, and pleased that you have the initiative to ask.
Your coop will be roomy enough for 6 hens but you will need a fox-proof run for them on an allotment. Hens provide a good way to dispose of excess produce.

Make sure you read up all the info in the Hen House so you're an expert by the time you get your girls  :D

Thanks for the advice.  Thankfully the chap who has the hen house said he also has the perches, so that is a lucky break.

Hubby is making the run so if everything else he has built is anything to go by it will be very strong and nothing will get through it.

We are so excited about getting the little ones, does March sound a good month to get them?  It should be getting warmer by then and they will have the fine weather to get used to their new home.

Am learning loads from here.  Thanks  :)   :)
