given we won't  get our allotment till at least next year, we went touring garden centres today and bought two largish pots and some seeds, esp autumn carrots which are going in one of the pots. The pots are around 1 foot or so deep.

We are going back at the weekend to pick up the compost, and get some spring onions and normal onions for the other pot.

Then I have two window boxes on my workshed, so I think I will give them over to herbs.

We are thinking of growing tatties in a big sack somewhere in the garden. What is the best time for planting potatoes?

Hi Mitchy, good luck with the pots!  

As for potatoes, usualy time for planting is sort of mid March to Mid April.  I didn't get my earlies in until late April this year, but they were doing lovely by the end of July.  And now my pink fir apple are ready!

You could try a couple of potatoes in a big bag or sack and try to get some for Christmas!  Just have to protect them from the frosts though.

Mine got destroyed last year as I had them in pots in the greenhouse, but the wind moved the greenhouse and the broken glass cut all my potato haulms to shreds, but a couple of years ago, I got some for New Year!

if you don't have a greenhouse space for them, it's rather late for autumn sowing.
