My other half is concerned that our ex batts will explode as they appear to be eating fairly constantly. They're on layers mash at the moment and I'm sure that they will only eat as much as they need. Am I correct.

In a word yes!!!!! lol  You should feed them ad lib, after all ex batts are egg making machines.  And no they won't explode, just making up for all those months getting only what they need!

We feed ours layers pellets though, doesn't make so much mess.

I've no experience of it, but apparently to get them onto pellets, you can gradually introduce some pellets each day until they get used to them and then do away with the mash.

I've been told that a loose rule of thumb is 120g per bird per day. ( Have have yey to verify this is correct)
It seems that a lot of people just ensure there is a constant supply.

I'm tring to gage it at present.

I'm feeding a scoop of growers pellets in the morning (not laying yet) between 3 birds and a hanfull of mixed feed in the after noon.

My exbatts eat as much as they like.  I used layers mash and mixed in with layers pellets. 50/50 and I even had to chuck the last  mash away because it was not being eaten!!!
