Bedfordshire champion onion

I have grown some bedfordshire chamption onions from seed this year, they have not been put into the open ground.

Has anyone any idea if I can put them in the ground now, will they overwinter.

or should I put them in the fridge to plant early next year.

Has anyone had any experience?

My initial thoughts are that the seeds shouldn't be planted until early next year (Jan/Feb indoors). I think the onions will run to seed next year.

Hi welcome to the forums :D

Personally I'd compost them and start again next year or eat them like chives/salad onions depends how big the bulbs are.

I should think, all onions will over-winter. At any rate you have nothing to lose and believe me, easier than try to store correctly. They'll should be great to harvest in early summer, won't store too well into second winter though.

Experiment. Plant them out now and see how they overwinter for you. And also start some early next year and plant out. Compare the differences. I'm often surprised at what does best. This year I direct seeded Bedfordshires straight into the ground in April. Got a respectable crop too but nothing huge, which I don't think this onion yields.
