First time growing sweetcorn this year.

I want to check my sweetcorn to see if it's ready and I've read all the advice about peeling back the green leaves and squeezing a kernal. But - I've peeled and peeled and cannot get to the kernals.

It feels like I need to take the whole lot off. I cannot seem to do it on just a tiny bit.

I don't want to ruin a cob only to find out it's not ready.

If it's baby sweetcorn you are growing I know what you mean. I picked some the other night and peeled back layer after layer of leaf. The tassels had changed colour so I picked them based on that and they tasted great.

On the larger corn I believe you can take a peak more easily.

No - it's larger corn.

I have stripped back 5 layers on one cob - it looks battered now. and I still can't see the kernals!

Just peel it back on one side at the top near the tassels.  If it's not ready to harvest you'll be able to fold it back over again (not perfectly but enough).
