Bought some Oyster shell today. Second egg laid, and again it's broken

I thought layers pellets had grit in them?

Anyway they were have a great time diving in to it, they were very pleased.

Give em a chance to get that oyster shell calcium into their system and I'm sure those eggs will be sorted!  :D

Grit is to help with the digestion.  A chicken grinds it food with grit in the gizzard.

Oyster shell and limestone flour are forms of supplemental calcium, which helps with the formation of egg shells and bones and stuff.

Even if it is offered they may not eat it.  I have one  X Batt that is giving soft shells because she loves finding her food on the muck heap and wont eat from the feeder!! She seams happy so I am happy.

I'm sure they'll get the hang of it all. :) one of mine doesn't lay often, the other lays every day without missing a day to date (touch wood).
Really hope the oyster shell helps. I add grit to the soil that they peck through, just figure as they're in a run the natural supply will be used up.

One whole egg today, undamaged, my little girl ate it. Had very thick white and small yolk, she said it was lush though.

Congratulations!  It's gorgeous.  Agree w/mickwood about the calcium and about the gender issue.... one of my girls (about 3 months old, give or take a few weeks) tries to crow all day long.  She's got round neck feathers and no other cockerel-like features, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. :)

You can occasionally get a thin shelled egg though.  In fact I got one from my older layers this morning.  they don't often get extra grit and oystershell though as it is supposed to be in the layer pellets and they have a large run, but these girls are coming up to their second year of laying.
