hi
bought 12 spring cabbage plants for £1.50 yesterday in the bargain bucket area at a garden centre! they look healthy and i thought for £1.50 ill take a chance and see what happens! do you think they will be ok? i cant think what the label said (too dark to look now!!) about  harvesting!
any tips? or have i bought a duff lot!?

No idea I'm afraid chickchick! I sowed my spring cabbages (Durham Early) on Sunday.

Yes, go for it chick chick, I buy most of my stuff in the reduced corner and it works for me, even if it doesn't I don't mind too much   Mrs Bouquet.

I'm sure they'll be fine - a little early perhaps.

If I were you, I'd pop each into a 3" pot and grow them on a bit. Plant them out when they've got a decent root ball.

Harvest wise, it's obviously during the spring, (duh), and with the quantity you have I'd wait until each makes a decent sized cabbage.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

spring cabbage harvest in spring  :oops:  :oops: of course!! would most people now be planting spring cabbage seeds then?

Mine went in 2 weeks ago. Now about 2" high, (Durham Early again).

I haven't started mine off yet - can't find any seed packets  :?

will have another look at the garden centre tomorrow.  

How late is too late for sowing them in the North East please?

re spring cabbage. put mine in july 29th and have just put the second sowing in today as a back up in case the rabbits & pigeons thin them out for me when i plant them out in early october, when the tates are cleared.
i grow 3 varieties duncan - pyramid & advantage. sown 3 seeds per cell in trays of 40 cells & plant out the complete cell so i can cut the spare plants for early greens & leave just 1 plant to grow to full size.spacing iuse is380x380mm :D
