Potato growing tips for next season?
« on: July 20, 2008, 18:21 »
I managed to get about 15kg of decent spuds out of 8' square of ground, it was my first attempt. I've no idea if that is good or bad or just average.
What I do know is that the spuds are very tasty!

Basically, all but a few of my plants died, so I had no choice but to earth up the remaining spuds which I did today.

As far as I can tell, I made the following mistakes:

1. Planted too close together
2. Let them grow "leggy" and waited too long to prop them up
3. Didn't earth up often enough or enough (possibly why they got leggy?)
4. Chose the wrong type - and got blight (Home Guard)
5. Possibly under-watered? (We had a very wet spring, so I didn't water at all during or after that)

What I'm trying to figure out is why the last few plants I have left are smaller, yet healthy?

I've probably given myself some obvious tips for next season, but I really would appreciate some pearls of wisdom from those who have grown numerous successful crops of potatoes.

There's just so much information available, sometimes it's overwhelming.
Jack of all trades, master of none.

First of all, definetely grow something else, it is a famously low yield potato.

Blight - you should be so lucky and it so unlikely that remaining plants don't have it if the rest did, winning the lottery is more chances methinks.

Never felt the need to support potatoes, also wouldbe a bit of a silly with a 100 or so.

Don't  plant too close, of course, but being in a shady situ, will send them leggy. Weren't yours next to a building?
