my husband has just agreed to build me a walk in run for my three girls :D  It isn't going to be massive (3m x 2m i think) but will be lovely for the girls :D

Do you have any hints and tips on making one and especially how to ensure it is fox proof. I think we will have slabs under it to stop burrowing creatures and for ease of cleaning.

Best advice is....

Use welded mesh (not chicken wire) at least 19g (1mm) thick. If you make it 25x13mm it should be rat proof-ish too.

Use sturdy framing and make sure the mesh is securely fixed to the timber. Use solid corrugated plastic roofing on top if you can.

Screw the joints, rather than nail them. More secure, and can be dismantled if need be. Make sure there are no sharp ends to catch yourself or your chooks on. The mesh is VERY sharp once cut.

Good luck and post photos afterwards.

Thanks for the advice Rob, it is very much appreciated. I was looking at 14g weldmesh or is that too thick? I am going to pop a roof on as I will use hemcore on the floor so will keep that dryer and also I think DEFRA would call one with a roof bio secure (just incase for the winter time)

I will be putting up pics after. I am hoping to get things started so we can finish off on the bank hol weekend in august. I am just so excited and I know the girls will love the space.

karlooben good luck! I would like to try to do things myself but my husband enjoys the challenges like this himself so I shall let him do it  How many girls do you have, that is a great sized run for them :D

Would this weldmesh be ok?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/weld-mesh-heavy-duty-16-gauge-1-x-1-30m-roll_W0QQitemZ330252814733QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item330252814733&_trksid=p3286.m14.l1318

That's overkill for foxes. The reccomendation is 19g, which is about 1mm thick. It doesn't look much but is apparently fox proof.

The lower the guage, the thicker the wire used. 16g or 14g is used for cats and dogs.

And obviously the price reflects the thickness !

You get a bit more 19g on a roll for your money.

lol yolky  your hubby sounds like a good guy doing al this for you.

i dont have any chicks yet i only got the idea a few weeks back and part of my second allotment is not good for growing on as i have a massive sycamore tree growing there so i decided it would be better for some chicks , selling the eggs to the other plot holders wil buy thier feed .

cant wait to see what u have done u must post pics  i may start doing a photo gallery of mine although it could be a few months before its finished .

would hubby settle for egg and chips

p;s  am going to make swings for mine  :?  :tongue2:

LOL

Karlooben I have to say he is a total star. I have only had my chooks a week and although I love the eglu I don't feel the run is big enough for them and I will be much happier seeing them in a bigger space. Hopefully they will reward us with lots of lovely eggs. I was thinking of doing a photogallery too. LOL @ swings. Your chickens will be having a ball :D  they are such lovely animals I am sure you will love keeping them.
