Do we know what Flubenvet actually does once it's inside or is this speculation?

Either way, it would be good to know. Do you know Aunty, or can you ask your contact at the ministry of worms ??

From what I know of it's mode of action the birds digestive tract suffers no long term harm.  It may have a bit of the squits while on the flubenvet but they recover quickly afterwards.

Thanks for the advice everyone.  I think that I'll give them a dose now just to be sure then hold off until next spring before giving them any more.

Now where were all those threads about how to get the stuff into them .......

Cheers

Personally I don't know kenny. I'd expect some physical symptoms first such as tail down and general downturn in wellbeing.

And good luck readerrabbit. It'll take you a long, long time. Everyone has asked at some point, but I'll let you discover all the methods if you have a while to spare

Can worms in chickens be dangerous for humans. I know that worms from dog poo can cause blindness  in humans in the extreme cases but is this the same for chickens? I am always careful to wash my hands after handling them but worry about what may come in on the children's shoes as they are not as careful to take them off/wipe feet as I am.

If your hens have worms there may be no signs to see in their poo !

Some of the worms are too small to see anyway and they stay in the gut and are not passed out with the faeces.  Eggs are passed out and these are microscopic.

So, the first outward signs you may get of hens with a too heavy worm burden can be when the chook is beginning to suffer.  Egg laying drops off, they produce white, milky runny droppings or greenish droppings.  And by then may be very miserable.

I'm very lucky as I keep a diagnostic parasitologist in my cupboard under the stairs so my hens can be checked for worms (for free) whenever I want.  But I would recommend to anyone who is new to keeping or who is not certain that they could spot a problem before it became serious to worm their hens every 6 months to a year with flubenvet.  More frequently if their hens environment makes them a high risk.
