Hurrah! We laid an egg! Didn't think for a moment that I'd be so excited and my kids were beside themselves!

We have 6 hens and I think it was the speckled one that produced this (based on the announcement she made after the egg appeared in the nest box!)

Here's a pic for the record:

Lesley, loves growing beans!

Congratulations
Greatest feeling in the world, isn't it.
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

they do make a racket don't they!

You'd have thought, what with survival of the fittest and all that, that they'd be quiet after laying so as not to alert the local rats etc that breakfast has arrived!

bird-brains!

Love the eggcup
As to the racket I have a treasured memory of one of my primary school headteachers (Mr Eastcrabbe) telling a story of a hen that always boasted about laying an egg - "Its a speckled egg, a speckled egg a speck, speck, speck, speck, speckled egg!" :D  - She was finally taught to be quiet, stop boasting and produced a lovely brood of chicks rather than having her eggs taken away.
37 years later I can still remember the story - maybe its his fault I've now got chickens  :D

perhaps my speckled hen is a direct descendant of the hen in your story!

Yes, it is a great feeling... and I'm soooo enjoying having hens around.

I'm learning too: they've mead great dents in the ground beneath the laurel tree in their run for dust bathing; and around the apple tree where there were weeds galore they've scratched the soil so much there are great swathes of thatch lying on the lawn (was not looking forward to sorting it out myself!); and they love to lie down on the patio – I guess it's nice and warm!

Congrats, welcome to the "egg club". I've spent all evening baking cakes for a church fete and the superior eggs really help. Demand outstripped supply so some of my frozen ones came out and still make good cakes. :D  :D

wooooooh, that's ambitious. Well it would be for me  :D   I made lemon meringue with my first eggies. Lovely it is too. Egg custard is a revelation too when made with the freshest of eggs. I did the Wozzer one and it's very thick and rich. Lovely with tart fresh rasps  :D
