Confessions of a bad hen keeper :-(
« on: July 26, 2008, 18:24 »
I found maggots in their poo.

I was mortified when I cleaned them out and found maggots crawling all over some of their poo.  Also there were some creeepy crawleys that looked like a cross between maggots and woodlice ie they looked like maggots with prickles.  What on earth were they?  They looked like nasty little critters.

Should I be thoroughly ashamed or is this just something that happens from time to time?

I would imagine in this heat, it wouldn't take long for flies to find it, lay eggs and hatch.

We poo-pick every day in the coop but there's always some get missed. Luckily, they tend to dry out very quickly so it could only be fairly fresh stuff you've found.

I'm surprised the chooks haven't beaten you to it and made a snack of them  :?

Fifi, how often do you clear the coop? Here is a tip - use wood shavings as a base for the floor. I find that with straw on top dries it all out. (i'm switching to shavings and shredded paper/newspaper soon)

Obviously not often enough.

A bit of a poke in the ribs for me.  I will certainly be more vigilent from now onwards.  Feel I've been a bit of a chicken keeping slut.

Don't beat yourself up, we all have busy lives and we do our best. They have a better life than battery hens. Do they need worming?
