hi
as you all know im new to this lark and enjoying very much until...... i dug up some potatoes as they looked ready!
some of the spuds have a patch of purple and green on them? any ideas on what caused it, they look like theyve been in a fight!!
now im not sure which type they are as they got a bit mixed up, some are kidney pots (new i think) and some normal pots.
admittedly some of the spuds were exposed to the light, as we picked them some had pushed thru the soil into daylight, was this the prob?

ps if i chop them bits off are the rest ok to eat?!!

Some varieties naturally have purple splotches on them. Green is light exposure and should not be eaten. I just chop it off and eat the rest and it's never done me any harm

Yes it's the light, looks like you didn't earth them up enough.

If you chop the green bits off the rest will be OK to eat.

It sounds like the potatoes were growing on the surface of the soil and the light got to them. If there's only a little patch of green I usually cut the green bits off and eat the rest and I'm still here so the rest of the potato doesn't seem to be too poisonous! If they're very green I would just bin them.

the purple bits are next to the green so ill cut them bits off and steam them up tonite with some mint from the garden, and if i live to tell the tale, ill thank you all tomorrow!
