Netting swedes?
« on: July 02, 2008, 18:10 »
Have planted some swede today - do I need to net it against birds/cabbage whites or anything? Atm they've been left to it as I ran out of time, but can pop over tomorrow if I need to.

I tried to get away with it, but the pigeons got to mine.

Fortunately the growing tips were still intact, so I've built a fortress around them.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I watched a pigeon yesterday. It landed one of my raised beds, walked past the cosmos, skirted the shallots, past the marigolds, stopped at the cabbage and then kept going past the dahlias.

I think I have them confused

is there a trick to getting your blue pipe hoops to stand up straight, or is it just a case of sticking them firmly in the ground? when i put netting or polythene over them it can drag them down at unpretty angles. i'm not   tidy gardener but this does irk me.

No trick really.  Just stick gadening canes firmly into the ground and slot the tube onto it.

Last year I didn't net anything and I got precisely zero brassicas after all my hard work.  I didn't realise that it was pigeons doing the damage but this year I've netted swedes, cabbage, caulis and kale and so far so good. I caught a caterpillar on my red cabbage the other day but they seem to be attacking my uncovered horseradish instead which I'm much happier about.

 I've never had to net swede!   Although not particularly huge on my site, there is still a pigeon problem and most other brassicas are definitely at risk.

Well my chickens eat young swede leaves so I'm not offering any to the pigeons

You may come to regret saying that. Ours seem to add a crop to the menu every year!
