Very New!!!!
« on: July 03, 2008, 17:53 »
Hiya i am very new to the Allotment scene and only just getting my plot sorted to plant some veg like lettuce, beetroot, carrots and radish which will grow easily (i believe!)

but now i am wondering what i should be doing to prepare for crop such as onions and garlic i am seeing different times to plant sets for an early harvest next year. I would like to get an harvest asap next year and then sow more in march time for a later harvest am i right in thinking this is correct?

Please anyone with a vast knowledge of allotment veg growing explain the basics to keep the veg comeing all year round.  For example carrots potatoes and onions

Many thanks Nathan

Japanesse onions are your over wintering ones, then the normal for  summer, shallots can be planted in winter, was your plot clear to start with? If not then spend the winter clearing it, it will be worth the effort next year. Most garlic is autumn planted, around november but some are spring time, where ever you get your bulbs from will tell you. Welcome to the forums.

hi nathan, not sure where to start really.
but i would advise to read read and read,it pays to take it slowly at first or you could become dispondant.
small plots nice and easy until you find out what your soil and area is like.
sow spring cabbage late july (up here anyway).
garlic also late october.
but i would spend the winter getting your soil and plot well fit mate  .
worry about your crops over the comming 2 or 3 year.good luck bob
