How's your plot after the storms?
« on: June 06, 2008, 22:30 »
So how did everyone do after the storms I cannot believe we had that much rain. My potatoes have a puddle only small, but I went away in April and paniced that my red onions were not in so the bit of my plot I was digging up I just rushed my red onions into and then made a path the other side and I covered it up with weed control material.  However instead of raised bed it created a under bed as I call it so my red onions were basically in a trench,  which then   at least half of it had about 2 inches of water all over and it took me 2 days to dig a channel to get the water out I know my own fault for rushing it!! We live and learn. A few people my way had problems that have been doing this a hell of a lot longer than me I have left my onions were they are in the theory they are probably damaged but we will wait and see. I hope you all got away with it and next year I have learnt my lesson to keep my plot as level as poss and dig round the edge properly!!!

oh I am glad we (essex) had a few days of what felt like non stop rain from spitting to then my street looked like a stream. Where my allotments are it seems to have affected people in different ways some not at all, to raised beds now look like paddling pools but the next allotment along their raised beds seem fine all down to preparation and drainage i expect.  Some people thou where they have had to dig a trench out ( and some is the only word for it is a trench) have flooded the plot next doors ! not good and no doubt someone will bring that up at the next meeting, but I'm glad yours is still ok you obviously did a lot more preping than me and mine is clay which dont help!!

My plot is flooded a bit. The raspberries are sitting in a couple of inches of water and some of the paths are just puddles. The other beds are okay - although you can see they are wet but not puddles on top of them.  Will the raspberries be okay??

It surprised me the difference between some plots right next to each other - one a swimming pool, the other fine.

went down to my plot  on friday afternoon to dig and 1 inch down it was dry as a bone still!  And it really did rain here for a bit anyway.

What storms?
It kept saying we were going to have rain but it didn't arrive.
We had a few spots - not enough to wet the ground so on with the watering.
Hope everything is OK for those of you that have been hot though. :)

Kel - we've had it wet and windy too...my runners have all had it, but everything else is okay. At least I can now dig the clay - it was like concrete a couple of weeks ago. :)

It's been baking hot & dry here for days - been hoping for a bit of rain so I could get away with not watering
Glass greenhouse was over 30 degrees today, and all the seedlings/plants in there were parched, had to give them a good drink tonight.
Can't believe how different we've all got it?  :?

Looking more to the long term effect - we haven't had storms this year but being in Gloucestershire were flooded last year - the number of slug problems I have is unreal (and ants but I don't think that's related) Even really tall beans are being attacked, and most of my pots which are usually safe - Hosta's gone completely.

Funny how its all so different every where my clay was rock hard few weeks ago too now its like sludge. It was boiling yesterday so dearly beloved had kids and I managed to spend 5 hours (my longest so far ) up there how quiet it is when there isn't 3 kids running around ha but I looked funny slidding all over the place.  I keep finding ants in my raspberry bush the * I hope it will be ok, my raspberries had alot of water and it seems to be fine, a few shallots started to bolt thou never mind
