Question for chilliman
« on: June 10, 2008, 08:36 »
Hi Chilliman,  I am growing chillies for the first time this year (four different types). I have a small greenhouse 6x6 and so i would like to know Q1  Which types of chillies can i grow outside?. Q2 Which type must be grown inside?. Q3 I have sectioned part of my greenhouse off for my cucumbers so should i be growing them in with the cucumbers for the humidity or in the same side as the tomatoes?.Q4 what mixture of fertilizer should i add and when?. I have in shed Fish blood & bone/Sulphate of potash/Superphosphate of lime/and basic lime, can i use any of these to give the plants a boost when putting them in there final pots. thanks for any help you can give me. And if anyone else has any advice i would appreciate it. :?

Heres what I do..

Q1 All of them. - As long as its a reasonable year the only thing that will be affected is yield.

Q2 Id keep any of the chinese (things like habaneros inside) - they have a VERY long season and benefit from the extra protection.

Q3 Depends on the species - something like a rocoto would prefer the extra humidity, but normally hot and dry is better.

Q4 Tomato feed is fine - although I tend to make it a little strong and less frequent that directed on the packet.

It all depends on what it is that you're growing - any idea?

Last year I grew 20+ varieties, all outside, all in pots - Im still using the powder and still drinking the vodka from them and I was picking peppers from one on the window sill at Christmas.  :D Im a bit behind this year and most of mine are still in 6inch pots - but they're happy outside and have been for at least a month.

Good for you, whereas here everything seems to be after them, slugs and snails and birds and who knows what else... To the extent, that you put out a nice, well developed plant and next you look there is a stump.

So the yield is greatly affected.

Bells and habaneros should enjoy it humid, I too, feed as per Lardman. I do incorporate well rotted manure but one should go easy on the N.

The slugs and snails shouldnt be too interested, you obviously have connaisseur slugs Gobs. I did see the odd bird pecking the peppers last year but not the plants.

Heres one of my piment d’ Espelette but don't tell the French as they're A.O.C. so Im a bad lad growing them :D  You can see a bit of slug damage down the bottom left, nothing like the damage they've done to the rest of my plants though.

BTW whats the rule on picture size 1024x768 seems a little big.

The Photobucket default is not too bad at 800 wide, but 600 wide is quite viewable.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I grew my 15 types last year in the greenhouse and outside on my sheltered patio. My habs were terrible but since then I have read that you should keep habs separate from other chilli plants.
