Hi - regarding the bark for flooring, not a good idea apparently as it can contain spores that effect the chookies breathing. I was advised to go for the wood chips and my girls love them, keeps the run dry and no damaging spores. You can get the bales from B+Q

I'm with Bramblehen - I used bark first time simply because Thornes stock it, with them it's either that of horse bedding which my poor hubby is allergic to! But i realised within days that the bark was no good. Its job around the garden is to 'keep the moisture in' therefore it holds water! My poor chooks got so damp they were in danger of getting trench foot!

I go to Crews Hill and buy 60ltr bags of wood chips for about £3 a bag. I buy two or three bags and it gives a good deep covering in a run about 9ft x 5ft. I poo pick once or twice a day, and change the whole lot about every 6 weeks.

Thanks Dawn & Bramblehen! Weird we are all in herts too! I will definitely be getting wood chips me thinks! I'm just about to make a  birthday cake for my son which requires 10 eggs!! I better get these chooks  pronto!!!
