Best to simply snap them off close to the stalks. Forget why its better than cutting, and definitely easier. I slowly follow the growth through the season rather than do any radical leaf culling at one time. I'm sure the plant could take it but I'd rather not be sorry in the end. I leave on any fruiting spurs, so if you're so inclined then give the spurs a chance to show you where the fruiting bits will be before snapping off leaves.

I presume you mean pinching out the growth from axles. Thumb and finger. But you can get rid of a lot of leaves after your trusses have set as they only take away the feed and water from the fruit.

make sure the toms are watered and hour or so before pinching out, if you dont you risk the chance of not getting a clean break which can lead to problems.

And if you've left it a bit long before you take the side shoots out - stick 'em in a pot of compost - extra plants!
