Comfrey roots
« on: May 29, 2008, 19:12 »
Can anyone describe comfrey roots?
Do they look like dead wood(but alive inside),not very bendy and a bit like tap roots ? :?
Sorry, I should have taken a piccy but it hasn't stopped raining here so didnt fancy going down to the plot and digging a bit up.
The reason I ask is, the bit I have been digging had been covered with a sheet for a while so there was no top growth, but I know there was some there before being covered.

There's at least two types of comfrey, one with fibrous roots and one with tap roots, I don't know which is the one that was tested and developed for ferilising, but you clearly have the tap root sort. Less popular as a garden plant as it spreads and because of it's taproot, is hard to dig up.

I doubt that there's really very much difference in the various varieties used for liquid fertiliser as even the original wild type was good, that's why it was developed. ;)

It's possible that you have something else there, like horseradish, but as you know there was comfrey, that's probably it.
Why did you cover it?
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

Bung it in a pot it will soon grow if it's comfrey, easiest way to propagate is by root cuttings, cut it into 1 1/2" lengths lay them on their sides in a tray of compost & sand 50:50 mix cover with more compost mix, keep damp and they will soon shoot  :D

Sawnee, I wouldn't bother and wonder about this one at all. Carry on, brave, whatever roots you remove, comfrey will be back. 8)

I have a small patch of Comfrey at the bottom of the allotment last year but now it is a quarter way up the plot and 5 to 6 feet high.
I am making Comfrey tea with it, but thinks it may take over soon.
I call it the wild end.
Sorry but haven't a clue what the roots look like.
I'm lost without my SatNav.

all my CUMFREY is growing around 3 sides of my compost heap , i

deal growing place, the little goodness that they use is well worth the amount i get from each plant ,

i usually get 4-5 kilos every year, cumfrey tea for everything i grow , usually i get 180 gallons ,

i place an onion bag full of chopped cumfrey into a blue  tub (45 galls) fill with water and leave it for a month ,

dipping the onion bag into the water to infuse the cumfrey into the water OVER THE PERIOD OF A MONTH,

comfrey is a tuber .... the tap root ... let it grow and then cut back to just a couple stalks every time and then it will see the winter through and come again
