Heart stopping moment
« on: May 21, 2008, 11:28 »
Just been down to the allotment after not being there for couple of days to find the plot holders each side of me with what looked like dead potato plants and bean plants. My heart stopped after having the weeds sprayed last week by a local farmer and some roundup. I thought I had killed there plants!! after walking up the rest of the allotment I found that everyones potatos and beans looked dead. OH MY GOD... I have ruined the whole allotments crops. Then a plot holder came over to me, I was thinking that she was going to go mad....... "did that frost get your potatoes and beans the other night?" she said.
The penny dropped
I had visions of being run off the allotment by an angry   mob of potato and bean lovers, swinging spades and throwing dead crops at me.
Thank god for the frost....sort of!!!
Although I lost my beans, my potatoes were put in late and have not come up yet. :D

Take it you will be digging the weeds out from now on.
So far, our potatoes have been OK and we haven't put anything else out yet - it needs to warm up soon though because the greenhouse is resembling day of the triffids.  :?

I normally hand pull any weeds but the top of my allotment has not been touched for ages and its overgrown. Ironicly it was only cleared because I have given the top to a young girl who was desperate to have a little growing space and was on a 3 year waiting list. Guess that will teach me to be nice

I posted a couple of weeks ago about my potatoes not showing and they had just started to peep through so no damage done there.

I'm actually glad I'm so far behind as I haven't lost a thing  :D

I had a similar thought when I bought four huge bags of sea weed back from the local beach, put it on my lawn and cut it up before putting it on four raised beds with young plants that I had been growing for several months. Had some spare so I gave a bag to my neighbour and as a generous act I cut it up for him.

A few hours later my neighbour watered it in and dug it around his nice flowerbeds. I went home to put my greenhouse to bed and noticed that my broccoli, cabbages and runner beans had wilted considerably during the day. I also put some in and around my tomato plants that I had been growing since late January to give them some slow release feed.

At this point I realised that I had put copious amounts of "weed and feed" on my lawn the day before.................right on the area where I cut up my seaweed. This was readily mixed in with the seaweed and grass that was now leeching the contents into my vegetables on three raised beds and 10 prime tomato plants.

Luckily it had no effect........Goes to prove that chemicals may be easy but make sure you get it right!!!!!
