potato blight and eel worms?
« on: May 19, 2008, 19:20 »
I planted a row of pentland javelin spuds about 3 weeks ago and yesterday was investigating why about a third had not come through. You know what's coming don't you
when i dug down they were either rotten and mushy or had little millipede type (but not) creatures in them or both. The other potatoes look healthy, at the moment - anyone any suggestions ?
All these moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

Most likely scenario here, I think is slugs borrowed in eaten most, moved on, other creepy crawlies moved in, tuber rotted, happens.

Shame it's a whole batch, personally, would not grow that variety. But then are you on freshly cleared ground? If so, damage to underground crops will lessen with time.

It's actually on the veg patch at the bottom of the garden - have had probs with blight before but usually in july/august not when the spuds first go in
TBH i usually grow earlies which have been out before the main problem usually occurs, or a more resistant type like kestrel. I just bought the pentland javelin on impulse - ah well, buy in haste repent at leisure.
