Ooops - been careless with labels
« on: May 08, 2008, 16:39 »
You know what it's like - potting on a few things, phone goes - come back and you've got 3 label, 3 pots and 3 identical seedlings.    Pumpkin and courgettes in my case.

I really can't see any difference between them - is there anything I can look for ? currently they're only 2 true leaves on each. The pumpkin are for an area of the garden that difficult to reach and I don't fancy having to make daily trips to pick courgettes from there !!

Thoughts ? other than re-sow.

No idea but I did something similar with my brassicas.  I can tell the three varities apart coz they are different colours but no idea wether they are brocolli, cauli or sprouts!

I religiously label mine but where the labels end up I can't imagine    Right pain innit     I did a huge tray of pumpkins, all different sorts, and dropped it so never did know which was which except by a process of elimination of sorts

You might know the difference between em when they start to grow on a bit. On the other hand

Well, things might greatly depend on your varieties - in fact, name and shame someone might know closely - but if you are in luck, this might help:

- most courgette leaves are very lobed, like palmate, five wriggly edged fingers, whereas most pumpkin ones just somewhat lobed

- by any chance would you have a bush courgette and a trailing pumpkin, so the letter will soon send out some things, I most unhelpfully can't remember the name of right now, someone please tell, bits they hook themselves onto things with  , the bush one won't have these

Otherwise just sow one more pumpkin, or as CQ says, but you'll need big pots...

Thanks all - its so nice to know it not just me  :D

The mystery pots contains...

Courgette Defender
Courgette Black Forest (climbing)
Pumpkin Jack-o'Lantern

Gobs I think youre looking for "tendrils" - Its still a bit early for them I think. Everything at the moment is just slightly lobed.

If I leave it a week and see what they look like, I wont have missed the boat for sowing will I?  Its my first year growing pumpkin the packet says March-May.  I really should have know better Id already done it twice before with the toms and peppers.

Tendrils. That's the one, they should be coming after 2nd 3rd set of leaves. I'm not growing any of these though. Only need to tell the two climbing ones apart though, the courgette should be flowering within weeks, mind.

But you won't be late to re-sow, you would have not been able to accommodate earlier sowings.

Long long ago when my daughter was about 3 I set up about 40 short seed rows, some of brassica plants, some seedlings such as leeks and others of various salad etc crops (no greenhouse in those days to start stuff off in). The next day she played Postman Pat with all the labels and posted them through a crack in the fence.
I learnt a lot that summer about leaf shapes. I got a lot wrong so best of luck !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
