Huh ! Found out what killed my rhubarb crown
« on: May 03, 2008, 10:29 »
Was poking about in the raised bed yesterday and discovered that the ants that we thought were banished have set up home in it, right underneath the dead crown.

Two of the 3 rhubarbs are fine, any tips on how I can get rid of the ants without damaging the rhubes ?

Cleeneeze or betterware do an ant trap which gets the ants to take the poison back with them Sorry I can't remember where I got mine exactly but think it was one of those. I got a small plastic bottle to put drops in the trap and it really worked. Bleach, boiling water, grenades etc all failed!!
I know less today than I did yesterday, and I knew nothing then!

We had a big invasion in the Kitchen and we got a trap from AntStop, put it in the line of ants and by the morning there were a few left but obviously not well, since then I havent seen another so it appears to have done the trick

It's called Nippon and it's active ingredient is boric acid, but although it might be cheaper to buy as plain boric acid I have no idea where you would get some, nippos is easy to find though, and you don't need much, one little tube will last for ages.
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

Believe it or not, I use carniverous plants to kill any troublesome insects. Other wise an ant trap would probably work.

How do they and which ones deliver on ants then?

I have heard of ants farming (protecting) aphids on plants in order to harvest their sticky residue.

You should do Bob's trick. Feed the ants some sweet stuff (like jam) and they will eat the aphids instead! (Won't get rid of ants though ;) )

My grandad used to pour boiling water over the nest. But perhaps hot custard would more fitting!

Or aphids.

Well, I did not try, but am very sceptical. Ants do eat aphids anyway, it does not stop farming them, they just generally abuse them, but never to extinction, to say the least.

Try a little tree grease around the bottom of the stems about an 1" up this should stop the little devils, depends on how many stems your currants have, it could get get tedious.
