Newbie saying Hi
« on: April 28, 2008, 19:50 »
Hi everyone,

I've just said hi to the allotment section and would now like to say the same to the poultry section!!

We moved from UK to Bulgaria last year and have a 2,000 sq mtr garden which we wish to use for vegetables, keeping chickens etc.

I have already bought 3 chickens which, if my understanding of the Bulgarian language is correct, are now 7 weeks old.  I've no idea whatsoever what breed they are as I've never kept them before and bought them purely on looks!!!  One is cream, one brown and one blackish.

I'm looking forward to having fresh eggs - that is, of course, if my understanding of the Bulgarian language is that they are female and not male!!!!

Think I may need some help here!!

Hi Pep and welcome,

If you can post photos you'll probably get a positive ID on the breeds and some idea of the ages.

With 2000 sqm you shouldn't have too much worries about your neighbours but I hope they turn out to be girls so you get some eggs at least !  :)

I think it's brave of you to set up in Bulgaria.

Thank you very much for the warm welcome.

I'd love to post a couple of piccies but have only just found out how to post text!!  So, piccies aren't possible unless someone helps me out.

Also, I'd like to know how high you think a run should be.  The chicks can be free in the garden most of the time but when I nip out I'd like to know they're safe.  There are a lot of buzzards and street dogs out here!!

Thanks again.

Pauline
