I put out a bird feeder at start of winter. I filled it with seed for small birds but the take was patchy. I noticed they were taking mostly sunflower seeds, so filled it 100% with that. this they took but left a mess leaving husks on garden. Then tried sunflower kernels and these were really popular. but before i went on hols i couldn't get to petshop so bought general feed again from Lidl. 4 weeks later it is still there and I have 2kilos of the stuff. If I get kernels for the birds, can I give the birdseed to my chickens?

I've given mine wild bird seed they enjoyed it,  and there were no ill affects after

great, thanks for that, i'll get kernels tomorrow for the wild birds and give the girls the seed mixed in with pellets. thanks

IMO I would only give as a treat cos wild bird seed is high in fat giving with pellets may be too high in fat for them and affect laying -iffy  as well if they are pullets

Others may think differently though  and I am a bit paranoid!

Hi, my birds eat the wild bird food, they go under the feeders and take what the birds drop.

Our chickens not only clean up below our bird feeders - they clean up after the dogs have had their tea too. They have taht working dog muesli stuff so i suppose it is ok!

feed it to them after they've moulted, thats when they need the extra oils and stuff
