It will grow out the bottom of even a 2' deep pit (this is how I got mint in the landlord's lawn onceuponatime; it is surprisingly tolerant of mowing!).  That said, it is easier to pull back a few pioneers so long as you keep on top of it.  I'd like to strangle whoever let it get into my vegetable plot in the garden though - I think putting it on the allotments would be an act of biological warfare.

dont worry stripey - mines a million miles from the lottie proper!!

oh yes , the choccy smelling mint some of you mentioned is probably the spearmint variety.....

My tiny back garden (think 2 x borders and an 18' lawn) resembles a battlefield.  Bear in mind that I haven't planted ANY of these I've got:  In the red corner, poppies, about 9 different types/colours, very pretty but a lot of foliage for what they are, marigolds, crazy things they are unkillable, nasturtiums, which now the neighbours on 3 sides have too as they climbed through my fences, aquilegia (OK that one's my fault), butchered them last year and took all the heads off, but obvoiusly missed some as they are the dominant thing so far this year, forget me nots, pretty so I don't mind, hyacinths, I hate the smell and swear I keep taking the bulbs out, I don't know how they've spread. Lemon balm is a pest too.

But did I get one daffodil this year, oh no, got the foliage but no flowers!
