Hmmm...  I used to buy liquorice root and chew it.  Yummy, but splinters in your gums  :shock:

by all acounts it used to be growen a lot in the pontefract area of yorkshire

It'll grow anywhere where there's well drained soil and space. The roots spread by horizontal rhizomes so don't put it in some small corner. Mulch well to keep down weeds and keep in some moisture. It'll need a few years to produce enough tubers to start harvesting.

It grows deep. Really deep. You need a digger to harvest it all  :shock:  :o
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

planted 2 roots in it at the week end so we shall see  :!:

watched a program last week about the last liquurice grower in Pantefract ,West Yorkshire and one thing i remember is that you need at least 8 foot of soil,hope you've got a big spade.

If the root you had was from the health food shop, it wouldn't have grown anyway as it would have died from being dried.  :cry:
