When would a Maran start laying?
« on: April 16, 2008, 09:36 »
I have found a supplier of Marans thanks "babe". As being a newbie I am planing ahead and thinking about Marans the Missus thinks I have gone cuckoo (sorry for the pun).
I was wondering when Marans start laying and as the supplier has two ages of bird available (8months POL and 3 months).
I was also thinking of getting one of each age. One bird will lay in may and the other may not lay this year(depending on when they start laying). Would this be advisable? Would this not achieve anything?

What do I want Chucks for?  Well for one the eggs. For two the pot. NO not POT POT the pot on the stove!!!! That is if after I have got to know my ladies I could do "it".

Name is down for 4 ex "batt's"

POL Marans

I been led to believe that Point of Lay for a Maran was about 18 to 21 weeks. I must have read it somewhere. I'm not that imaginative. If that's the case, 8 months is well into a laying career isn't it?

Yes 8 months is!!! I will be wary of the supplier. The supplier was not on the list of names from "babe" before anyone wonders who. Thanks Undergrowth.  By the way do you have a problem with small veg?  LMAO
Ok strange sence of humour I know. I comes from being left in a windowless office and in front of a computer screen all day.

Marans are not the most prolific egg layers when compared with some breeds, so you obviously want to get the most out of them, so POL would be the best option. At 8 months of age they are still very useful but I'd be looking for a decrease in price. The guys obviously had them left on his hands.
