We picked up a pack of these the other day (made up for the lousy service  :( ) - how should they be used and what on ?

you can chuck em on the compost heap or use them as a barrier against slugs. They are very strong so keep them away from your plants

I use left over coffee (strong, fresh stuff) to kill the weeds that come up in my gravel  :D  I don't like coffee that much so don't want to waste it  :D

I love coffee and get loads of grounds. Starting to use it around the
seedlings coming up under cloches as slugs can make the lot
dissappear overnight. Also use beer traps, and a torch  :)

I was wondering though if there is any long term effect on the soil
if I keep adding the stuff. Is it poisonous, or acid, or does it rot quickly??

it's very strong so keep it away from your plants. You use it to make a barrier around your plants ostensibly to keep slugs off. if it comes in touch with your plant they'll probably keel over, especially seedlings
