Planted potatoes yesterday... Today its snowing....
« on: April 06, 2008, 11:34 »
Yesterday I thought I would take the opportunity to plant potatoes and onion sets.  We are in Eastbourne, Sussex and I did honestly think we would miss the snow, however its 11.30 am and the snow has settled in the last half an hour.  Is it too late to cover them or does it really matter if they havent had any chance to grow yet?    :?

Hi Matt

We are in Newhaven and driving over to Eastbourne latter,,will we get there?

Pots in the ground here but we assumed they are under the ground and safe,if it was frosty the ground would get really cold but a liyyle snow i think is ok.

I may be wrong though as i am a very new veggy grower.

So basically dont listen to me!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Hazel Ann.  I would suggest you put snow chains on the car.  Drive carefully!

i expect they will be ok under the blanket of snow. just hope it does not freeze. the green bit is very tender but that will not yet be up.

We planted our spuds yesterday too and was wondering the same thing.

We had about an inch of snow this morning (West Kent), we've probably had another couple of inches since then as it's been snowing ALL days so far, quite heavily too but it's obviously warmed up a bit as what was here has melted a lot and nothing has laid for ages. Hope it all clears off, as I'm sposed to be taking the kids to my parents for the holidays tomorrow, may have to postpone it if the weathers too bad.

At this time of year you could get light frost still, but as long as the spuds are below ground and not yet sprouted above ground they're fine. The cold soil will tell the spuds it isn't time to keep growing. They're quite sensitive to soil warmth and will adjust themselves so no need to worry about fleece and such.
The best potatoes I've grown are actually tubers I missed the past fall. You'd think they'd rot, but they don't. When the weather is right, they put out great tops and I always gets the best yield from these fall spuds. Not sure why but that's how it works.

I didn't plant my onion sets or potatoes as I saw on the weather the weekend was due for snow.  Not had any apart from a few flakes, had lovely sunshine instead!  Typical for me that!

Hopefully I'm not too late to do it during this week?   :?
