There is something about bats.... someone will know... I stained inside of mine - can't remember what the stuff had to say on the side but it was something to do with bats...

Because bats are protected the paint makers have to test for toxicity.
If it's safe for bats, it's safe for chooks. Apparently.

I used wickes water based 'wax-enriched' preserver/stain.

Once dry it's not a prob as I think with most of them. Even creosote is meant to be ok once dry and aired out.

Our base board had 3 coats and will stand a bit of a scrub. Varnishes might start to crackle and the chooks will pick at anything and eat bits. Might be best to test some and chuck water at it after a week or so.

I would have thought weathershield would be ok but I'd try a bit first if you have time.

I've left my inside bare wood but done the floor so it can be rinsed and disinfected.
I may regret this in time but can still access it for staining through the removable side if need be.

I used the wickes stuff on the roof (t&g apex) and had huge leaks the first time it rained. I now have a temporary cover of felt over most of teh roof which needs permanent fixing.
