I would very much like to rear some Welsummer hens but don't really want the expense of buying an incubator. So far - in the last year none of my hens have shown the slightest hint of becoming broody. Is there any way to encourage them. I have 3 hybrid browns, one maran hybrid and a Cochin.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.
If you do things well, do them better. Be daring, be first, be different, be just.

Your hybrids are actually bred for laying and with the trait of not actually going broody at all as one of their desirable attributes.
Whilst the modern hybrid will occasionally go broody, it goes against the intentions of the birds architects.
IMO your best bet is to buy in a few silkie crosses, they make excellent and frequent mothers.

Muntjac always recommends Buff Orpington Bantams as broodies too.

Hi.
Silkie crosses are birds that have been bred by running a silkie cock with hens of another breed.
My favourites are silkie to Light Sussex bantam or to a game hens.

does it make a difference to mothering ability whether pure breed or cross ? If so crossed with what would be better - if you see what i mean?

If you leave some eggs (artificial ones) in a nest it may encourage one of your chooks to go broody.  You can then swap them for fertile eggs when you think she is sitting fast.
