YIPPEE FINALY GOT MY PLOT!
« on: March 29, 2008, 21:04 »
Well my friend and i have finaly got our plot i am told it is a chain long and a quarter of a chain wide which if i am correct measures 66 ft long and 16.5 ft wide.
We are fortunate enough to know the previous occupier who had to downsize to a half plot due too ill health. So we know what was planted where for our rotation and she has given us some tips re the site.
We are very lucky as she is going to leave quite a bit of stuff there for us we have inherited water butts and a fruit cage also some plastic type stuff to put over a freshly dug bed to keep the weeds out.
Unfortunatly we have clay soil so we are in for quite alot of work but im sure we will reap the benefits soon enough. On the plus side for a year it is only costing us £30 we have a water supply on site and free manure! Plus wonderfull views for when we are having a five minute rest! I did take some pics for me to post here but sadly i have just found out i dont know where my camera lead is i thought i did but apparently it is now missing!
So we have a lot of work to do as the plot is a bit over grown and the beds seem to be in a strange order so we are thinking of moving all the beds around but what i need to find out know is how long does a bed have to of not had manure on it before things like carrotts can be grown there? We have been told that all beds have had manure over the last year so need to plan what is going where and so forth so all advice gratefully recieved.
Im so excited i have waited for so long as most of you know and know it is acctually happening YYYIIIIIIIIPPPPPPPPPPPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE XXXy

Well done fallen angel. Now the work begins. I am going to grow my carrots in buckets this year because unless you have fine soil they can work their way down in you end up with the weirdest shaped ones.
Happy digging.

Thanks matron i cant wait im hoping that the weather is nice over the school holls as my girls are with their dad for a week so my son and i will be able to break our backs digging lol we are lucky though as 2 beds where rotivated and then bedded down for the winter so we will be able to use them pretty much straight away and they are not beds that we need to change either so thats good!
The previous occupier told us she had trouble growing a few things so we are going to grow in grow bags on the plot and then use the soil from them when we are done to work into the clay/soil along with lime and sand and so on.

Hey congratulations mate!

Like the others have said the hard work now starts but the end results are well worth it!

This is my first year with a plot as well and i have been amazed with how adictive it is. I would spend all day at my plot digging and tinkering if i could. The worst thing is i sulk when i cant get down there!

Good luck anyway, and keep us posted with your progress!

Thanks guys i have waited for what feels like an age for this and now its here i cant wait to start i think the hardest work is going to be keeping my 5 year old twin girls out of trouble! I have told them all they will have their own grow bag to grow things in as i am sharing this plot with a friend its not really right that my children take over! They are excited but im not sure how long i will hold their enthusiasm for if they dont see something happening within mins lol. I have started some seeds of at home and everyday they go and check them luckily it has not taken long for them to germinate and they are seeing things grow hopefully soon enough they will be eating bits too!
We are hoping to go back to the plot tomo afternoon and get started so i will take some more pics and hopefully the fairies will find my camera lead
